Don’t Hate Me For Hating Currywurst!

I hate currywurst.  There.  I said it.  Being so in love with Berlin as I am means that sentence borders on — no, it is — blasphemy.  The people here go nuts for the (pork?) stuff, and I really cannot understand this gastronomic mystery.  In fact, I’ve been told that Germans eat more than 70 million servings of currywurst cuisine annually.  There are scores of currywurst restaurants in the city, and even a museum dedicated to immortalizing it’s meaty history.
Yes; greasy hot dog, chopped up, with icky too-sweet ketchup and sneeze-inducing dusty curry powder draws visitors from around the world.  In my Berlin office cafeteria, I could always tell when it was currywurst day — the line snaked all the way through the entire eating area and out the door.
Maybe it’s an American thing, I don’t know, but I can confirm that my compatriot, Travels of Adam, feels the same: YUK!
But, if you are one of those that are passionate about spicy grease mixed with sugar and you are in Berlin, besides eating it you might want to visit the Deutsches Currywurst Museum.  Nose your way through the powdery sniffing stations, get your very own personalized currywurst profile, and learn all about the curious history of the cult snack food while lounging on a giant weiner shaped sofa. To keep the curated experience in your heart long after you leave, you can even harass their oblong German speaking mascot, QWoo, on twitter.

For sure this is a unique experience, and one that is truly Berlin.  But don’t take my word for it — check out a few more reviews on the food and the restaurant from others in Berlin:

Yay! Thank you for speaking up on a very important subject. Too many tourists show up and think they have to love currywurst, and the Berlin tourism industry certainly plays it up. There’s plenty of good food (sort of) in Germany, it shouldn’t be diluted with things like currywurst!

Eating Currywurst in Berlin is like eating the sad hot dog @ IKEA: Part of the show! :D

Like your article. Might be a topic for a scientific investigation to clarify, why the hell Currywurst is the non plus ultra. Although…the only exception I may accept is, when you finish your nightlife trip in Berlin and need to stop at the Curry Wurst Bude at Kudamm because your refrigerator is simply empty :-D

Currywurst is overrated (been here for ten years and haven’ t felt the need to eat it). German food can be much better than that…

Absolutely Mari! I really like königsberger klöpse. :)

I like currywurst well enough, but I don’t see how people can outright love it — and certainly not why it’s the most famous Berlin dish. Kinda embarrassing if your signature dish is just sausage with ketchup and curry powder.

I (English),have lived here since the good old days when we had our wall and seen all the changes that have taken place since then on a day to day basis.I must have eaten currywurst about 4 times in those 30 odd years …It is crap and i can only attribute its popularity to the gullibilityof folks to fall for hype and advertising generally and this muck in particular,
There is always a new generation that comes along and so those satan,s little helpers that work in marketing always are able to make a buck out of the young before they get wise.
